Thomas Todd (of TH & EE Todd & TH Todd, Barelees Farm, Cornhill on Tweed, Northumberland) is giving growers either side of the border the chance to see, first hand, the farm-scale work in progress with Helix Northumberland.
Farm Facts
- 260ha arable unit which has been in the Todd family since 1987
- Crops grown include: wheat, vining peas, spring barley and oilseed rape and the use of cover crops
- Sandy loam and heavier sandy clay loam
Farm Focus
- Increasing soil organic matter
- Improve nitrogen efficiency
- Determining which cover crops to grow
Cultivations are based on minimal soil disturbance with the aim of retaining moisture and reducing costs without compromising the crop establishment.
The hosts have been part of the Yield Enhancement Network (YEN) since its inception and have gained a valuable insight into how to promote the yield potential of crops and use that knowledge to manage any limiting factors to realise more of that potential.
The farm has all been TerraMapped to gather in depth soil data. Using this data, maps produced within the Omnia platform allow for bespoke applications of inputs. This has been particularly relevant in producing detailed seed rate plans to optimise plant stands to achieve optimum yield.
Cover crops play a vital part in the farm’s cropping rotation to maintain soil organic matter, retain nutrition and maintain good soil structure.
