Precision dosing

Hutchinson’s agronomist Rob Saunders updated visitors on some of the research projects that the agronomy company has been involved with. For example, it has been part of a three-year Innovate UK-supported precision-dosing project that concluded earlier this year. Rob explained: “We need to treat trees as individuals because, even when adjoining trees are genetically identical, they can perform very differently. Some become almost biennial, producing lots of small apples one year and then the following year they don’t have much blossom, but more extension growth.”

The project involved LIDAR scanning of trees in winter to map tree height and density before another drone-based scan was taken in the spring to assess blossom. Both sets of data were then analysed to develop a variable rate plan for the application of thinners and growth regulators through a purpose-built sprayer, designed and built by consortium member NP Seymour Ltd. Other members of the consortium include Acclaimed Software Company, NIAB East Malling, Outfield Technologies, Plumford Farms, and Worldwide Fruit.
