Sustainable packaging – Fresh Produce Journal

At a time when there’s a drive to reduce the environmental impact of fruit and veg packs, Produce Packaging has a number of solutions to meet suppliers’ needs ...

As the fresh produce industry faces mounting pressure to reduce plastic waste and embrace sustainable practices, and with the introduction of the Extended Producer Responsibility (ERP) policy, innovative innovative packaging solutions are emerging to meet these demands.

Produce Packaging is at the forefront of this movement, offering forward-thinking designs that reduce environmental impact while improving product protection and shelf appeal. Here are four key packaging innovations reshaping the industry:

Padless punnets for soft fruit

The MONOAIR® range of rPET punnets offers a mono-material solution that simplifies recycling for consumers. By incorporating a cushion directly into the design, these innovative packs protect soft fruit throughout the supply chain without the need for a separate absorbent pad. This reduces packaging components while streamlining recycling. Further advancements in padless technology for raspberries and blackberries are on the horizon, promising even greater efficiencies.

Cartonboard trays for manual and automated closure

Designed for either manual or automatic closing machines, these cartonboard trays are a fully paper- based alternative for packaging exotics and stone fruit. Flaps on the top of the pack can be sealed with glue or a label, securely holding the fruit in place without the need for a separate film or lid. This all- in-one design not only eliminates plastic but also enhances packing efficiency. Made from FSC or PEFC-certified materials, these trays are easily recyclable in household waste streams and provide an excellent print surface for branding.

Top-sealable thermoformed pulp punnets

EarthCycleTM thermoformed pulp punnets offer a sustainable alternative to plastic, fitting seamlessly into existing packing lines. Their smooth, uniform texture is achieved through an additional thermoforming process, improving consistency compared to rougher pulp options. These punnets are heat-sealable on standard machinery, easily recyclable, and made from responsibly sourced, cellulose pulp fibres. Produce Packaging is also working with partners to develop ink- free laser etching for branding on these punnets.

Paper punnets for soft fruit

With growing demand for paper- based packaging, Produce Packaging’s EverGrow range is a standout option. These top-sealable punnets use a water-soluble varnish instead of a plastic coating, allowing for easy house- hold recycling. Their paper construction provides an ideal print surface for striking branding, offering both sustainability and marketing benefits.

As the produce sector evolves, Produce Packaging remains dedicated to delivering innovative solutions that balance environ- mental responsibility with commercial success. By adopt- ing these new designs, growers and retailers can reduce waste, enhance protection, and boost shelf appeal all in one step. Learn more about these innovations at www.producepackaging.co.uk
