Maize variety choice more important than ever as challenging season throws up clear differences

A difficult growing season for maize has shown up clear varietal differences, particularly between early and late maturing varieties, at the CAS Maize Variety Trials at Grosvenor Farms, Alford Hall, Alford, Chester, CH3 6HJ.

Archie Boase, agronomist with CAS/ Hutchinsons Ltd, who is responsible for the trials, invites farmers to attend this year’s OPEN DAY which runs from 11am-2pm on the 4th SEPTEMBER 2024 to find out more.

“We have 12 new and current varieties on show from leading maize breeders Pioneer, LG, KWS and Bayer, which have been drilled over two different drilling dates, so there is plenty to discuss around early vigour.”

He points out that more than ever we are seeing the importance of maize variety choice on less than favourable sites.

“This particular trial looks at early maturing varieties which are showing some promise and may be of interest particularly after this challenging season. At the time of writing, we are desperate for some heat to push the varieties on to ensure a decent cob size and good dry matter yields.

“We will also have the results of a foliar nitrogen trial to look at across one plot, as well as the results of last year’s variety and foliar nitrogen trials.”

To book in or for further information, please call the CAS office on 01704 840060.

BASIS and NROSO points will be available to collect.
