Drowning in Data – Tillage & Soils
Modern combines produce a plethora of data as they work. But how do farmers’ make best use of all that information and use it to best guide future decisions ...
Focus on the finances
James Lane, Digital Services Specialist for Hutchinsons, suggests farmers first focus on the financial performance:
“What have you made per tonne and per hectare? That data can help you calculate the profitability of the field”.
It also enables the farmer to assess how successfully all inputs have been used and where future applications might be altered.
“Yield maps don’t necessarily tell you everything. You might have a field or area of a field that has done really well.
“But use the data to assess whether it could have performed better. Combine this year’s data with that from previous seasons to get a clear picture.
“That should help you make sound decisions on amending applications for future seasons.
“On the other hand you might have a red area on the yield map which yielded poorly, maybe because it lay wet or might be under Blackgrass pressure.
“It might require some remedial action or the answer might be to raise the seed rate to get a thicker crop to out-compete the Blackgrass”.
